NOW FIXED - RESOLUTION UNCLEAR AND AN ANOMALY REMAINS
Tried creating a new workgroup - noeffect - so switched back to MSHOME
Logged on as guest ( no passowrd) mirroring xp2
Through explore network neighborhood clicked on owner-300ztppsl (xp
and got
\\owner-300ztppsl is not accessible. No permission to access resoure.
I then clicked on the shortcut I had which points t
\\OWNER-300ZTPPSL\share.
It works!
Go back to explore network neighborhood clicked on owner-300ztppsl (xp
and got error again.
I have drives c,d,e,i,x in my xp computer and 'share' is
sub-directory within the e drive.
I deleted the 'qtyph' account from xp - still ok.
(qtyph is the name of my win98 pc. I created it in looking for
possible fix).
Logged off win98 as guest
and logged on as dave with password (mirroring a dave/passowrd logon o
win xp) still ok.
Change Dave on winxp so that no password required (left new passwor
blank).
Restarted winxp.
Still ok.
Restarted win98 as dave/password (dave on xp has no password)
Still ok.
Guest account on xp turned off
Still OK.
Reset above Netbious setting to default.
Still OK.
Looking at computer mangaement/system tools/event viewer/security o
win xp it looks like:
win98 logon as dave/password with xp user dave and password treated a
user 'dave'.
win98 logon as dave/password with xp user dave and NO password treate
as user 'guest'.
This implies - if there is a win 98 user name and password it will use
that users name.
If not, it will accept it as guest.
IN SUMMARY.
After 3 weeks of extensive hassle I can now 'share' in by directions.
LESSONS FOR READERS WITH SAME PROBLEM
I still don't know why 'short cut' works to \\OWNER-300ZTPPSL\share
but explore/network neighborhood still gives \\owner-300ztppsl is no
accessible. No permission to access resoure.
Any takers?
Possible fix:
i) SP2
ii) Steves above suggestion :
Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools
net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ii)
iii)Other / misc. testing.
Thank-you all for your help - particularly Steve.
I help people on a video editing forum (and other places), s
hopefully, in the fullness of time, your kindness will be repaid by
third party when you have a problem - either pc related or otherwise.
