Win ME Notebook cannot detect 'Always on' Internet Connection

Hello.

I have borrowed a notebook computer from my education
institute. It comes with a dial-up account but I'd like
to
use my persisting broadband connection of my desktop
computer (with Win 98 SE and Win XP Pro installed).

The broadband connection is 'always on'. (It
automatically
connects to the Internet when I log on to Windows. I
don't
know how to say this in computerese :| ) When I
subscribled to the service, all I need to do was the plug
the network cable to the LAN card and both Windows in my
desktop detects the connection automatically and no
configurations were required.

However, when I unplug the cable from my desktop and plug
it to the notebook, Win ME doesn't detect the connection
automatically like the Windows in my desktop does. How
can
I fix this?

Any help are greatly appreciated.

PS: I'm suspecting the LAN card in my notebook isn't
functionly properly? How can I carry out a diagnosis on
it? Thanks again.

After you plug your laptop into your broadband connection type at
Start/Run...

winipcfg

hit Release then after it comes back hit Renew

you *might* have to reboot, but if you remember to Release before
leaving the office then Renew'ing when you get home might allow you to
get on straight away.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your post.

I have plugged the cable to the port in my notebook and
opened 'wincipfg'. However, I found that both the Release
and Renew button were disabled.

I tried leaving the cable plugged on and reboot my
computer. It didn't work.

Do you have any other ideas? Thanks again.

Networking is way outside stuff that I consider myself competent at, but
probably your at-the-office settings are too different from your home
settings to work right.

At a guess you'd have to Add a new Network Connection (even though it's
the same adapter) using ISP's recommended settings.

Programs/Accessories/Communication/Internet Connection Wizard,check the
LAN box and you should be set.
