Yes, I realized this is very similar to a recent post, but is different...

Previously I had the xp sr2 home machine connected through a wireless USB
adapter to a Netgear router, and the 98se machine connected through a
crossover ethernet cable to the xp machine. Both machines could see each
other through the network neighborhood, share files and printer, etc. But
only the xp machine could access the internet, since I never could get ICS to
work.

So I added a wireless USB adapter to the 98se machine. Now both machines
could access the internet, and everything still worked. I removed the
crossover cable (since it was running across my floor), and the machines
still could see each other. But a couple days later, the 98se machine could
not see the xp machine, and a couple days after that, the xp machine could
not see the 98se machine.

Now both machines can still access the internet through their wireless USB
adapters, but can not see each other through the network neighborhood (or any
shortcuts, including the printer). The only way I can get them to see each
other is to type the router-assigned numeric IP address in the start/run
command. This usually works, but it takes a while. Using the name of either
machine does not work. And note that some of the behavior is intermittent.

So how do I get the machines to consistently see each other through the
wireless USB adapters, without stringing the crossover cable across the
floor? Since it did work that way, I believe the network names, permissions,
etc. are okay.

Thanks.

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers. I've
written a web page with details:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...hoot/netbt.htm

Remove IPX/SPX and NetBEUI if they're installed on either computer.
Use only TCP/IP.

Steve, thanks for the help. I did enable NetBIOS for the wireless adapter
on the xp machine, as per your web page, and on the 98se machine it was
already enabled and grayed out. The effect is that now the xp machine can
see the 98se machine by name or numeric IP address, when typed in the
start/run command, and the 98se machine can see the xp machine by name -- but
only after accessing it first by numeric IP address, both again in the
start/run command.

But neither network neighborhood can see the other machine. Any ideas on
getting this to work? I'll poke around on that website when I get time. And
of course we'll see if this still works in a couple days...

Thanks again!

[Replying to my own post...]

Steve, I read what you wrote about network neighborhood to Allen K, and
tried those suggestions, but turning off the browser master in 98se caused
network neighborhood to give an error message and not see anything.

So I'd be okay without network neighborhood, except that the 98se machine
only sees the xp machine if I use the numeric IP address first, which takes a
couple minutes, and then the name. (The numeric address can also change
depending on what the router assigns, but I configure the router to use fixed
addresses.) That makes it kind of difficult to use shortcuts.

Any idea on this one?

Thanks again.
