Win 98SE not connecting to the internet

I have a broadband internet connection through a new 3COM ADSL wireless
router (3CRWE754G72-A).

My Win XP Pro machine connects with no problems using one of the ethernet
ports, as does my Pocket PC using the WiFI connection.

I have connected my daughter's Win 98SE machine to the router using one of
the remaining 3 ethernet ports. Once I have given it a fixed ip address
(192.168.1.4, subnet 255.255.255.0) I can connect to my computer to
transfer files back and forth.

I can't, however, get it to connect to the internet. IE 6 comes up with
'The page cannot be displayed, the page you are looking for is currently
unavailable' etc. This is when trying to access sites such as Google which
I can connect to using my Win XP machine with no problesms.

It's got to be a configuration problem: but where?

Any advice gratefully received...

If you have the other machines setup to obtain an IP address automatically
(using your router as the DHCP server) then they also pick-up the addresses
for "Default Gateway" and "DNS server" automatically (which would be the
address of your router).
So, to manually configure your Win98 machine, you need to add your router's
address (probably 192.168.1.1) as the default gateway and DNS server. - or
just set it to obtain an IP address automatically instead and let DHCP do it
for you.
