Use authenticated logon (Network Logon) on the Windows 98 computer, none
of that pressing escape to log on to the box! On the Windows 98
computer create a user account with the same username and password as
the one you use to log on to the Windows 2000 computer.

On the 2000 pc access the Properties of the shared drive and Add the
"allowed" username to the list. The name must match whatever name is being
used on the 98SE pc. That "name" doesn't seem to have to actually have a
login account on the 2000 pc.

Just went thru this bs myself with four 98SE pcs, one 2000 and one XP-Pro.
Had to add five names for the logins on the other pcs before 2000 would
allow access. Note - the Everyone in the "list" on the 2000 pc doesn't seem
to work as expected.

Is it asking for the IPC$ password? If so, Windows 2000 is trying to
validate the user name which wants to access its shared files. The
solution is to create a user account on the Windows 2000 machine with
the same user name and password that you use to log onto Windows 98.

I found you don't have to create an account on the 2000 pc, just add the
name the 98 pc is using to list of Allowed users can access under shares
Properties.

In my experience, you can only add a user to the permissions for a
Windows 2000 share if that user already has an account on the Windows
2000 PC. I don't see a way to add an unknown user to the permissions.
If you've found a way to do that, "pjp", please tell us how.

To give permission to a known user, you can either:

1. Add that user's account.

or:

2. Add the "Everyone" group, which includes all known users.

I just went into Add under Properties/Permissions for the share and type in
the name as best can remember. Can't check right now as took 2000 off the
system it was on but definitely never created any user account(s) except the
first and only one created when installing 2000. All the 98 pcs have diff
user logins (basically mine, wife's and kids each have own pc and each uses
their own name for login) so it wasn't just one common name added, e.g. I
specifically remember entering each name without creating any user account.
