How can you connect to a vpn using a cable modem with
Win98? There is no option to use existing connection and
the system expects to dial through a regular modem.

I think support for PPTP connection over a LAN (or dsl/cable) was
included in the DUN1.4 upgrade.

I have set up many win98 PPTP connections, but it was a long time ago and I
don't have a win98 in front of me. But as I remember when I clicked to add a
new connection and named it, there was a drop down box or something there or
in the next box so you can change from the modem to VPN. You will have to
search around till you find it. After you change it from the modem to VPN
you will see a place to put the IP address of the VPN server, and a user
name and password. Once you have it configured you make a connection to the
internet with your modem, and then make a second connection by clicking on
your VPN connection to connect to the VPN server. In a few minuets you
should see network resources. The PPTP connection is all encrypted including
the password.

PS if you don't see the VPN in the drop down box, you will have to add that
service in network properties first.
