Hi,

I have two Win 98 machine sthat I am trying to network
through a hub. I have had them sucessfully networked
before, then for no apparant reason the network has failed.

One is a laptop and the other is a desktop, I have
replaced both of the network cards and tried a different
hub, I have also tried connecting the PC's directly via a
X-Over cable - but to no avail. The one thing that is
puzzling me is:

From the Desktop I can ping the Laptop, however when
trying to ping the desktop from the laptop is unsucessful.

Both machines are using fixed IP Address 169.254........
and are both on the 255.255.0.0 subnet, I have also
checked that they have the same settings (apart from
computer name) under the Identification tab on Newtork
properties.

Any ideas gratefully received

Rob

Actually, the 169.254.x.x is reserved for automatic private IP
addressing...which is what a system will default to when it is set to
receive an IP from a DHCP server and a DHCP server is unavailable.

Agree that using 192.168.0.xxx and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 is a
better choice.

Just a thought...

Possibly a misconfigured / misbehaving firewall or a broken tcp/ip
stack on the desktop.

If you have firewalls running, uninstall them (don't just disable)
until the problem is resolved.

I suspect more likely will be the latter. Unfortunately, I don't know
the solution short of a clean install (ie zapping your current
registry first).
