I have a windows server 2003 domain controller. I
installed it about a month ago. All of a sudden none of
the Windows 98 machines on my network cannot log on. The
error message I get is "The domain password you supplied
is not correct, or access to the logon server has been
denied". Up until today there have been no problems.
There have been no configuration changes on the server,
the only thing I added recently is a the Microsoft
Loopback adapter to get the backup software working. I
have tried restarting the server, restarting the netlogon
service, I checked the lmhosts and hosts files on the
windows 98 machines. The 98 machines are getting IP's
from the 2003 server through DHCP, the WINS service is
started. I have also tried re-adding the 98 machines to
the network but nothing has worked. Any help will be
greatly appreciated. If you need any more information
please ask or email me.

Adding a loopback adapter gives the domain controller two IP addresses
(ie it is multihomed). This is a long standing problem with domain
controllers and Netbios names, and W98 still uses Netbios names to find a
logon server. It can also upset browsing on the LAN.

You could try disabling Netbios over TCP/IP on the loopback adapter
(unless the backup software requires it). After you do, check that there are
no "wrong" entries still active in WINS.

1. Make sure the Loopback Adapter's IP# is from a different subnet. You
don't want two adapters on the same physical machine in the same subnet even
if one is "virtual" as opposed to "physical".

2. Go to the Properties of "Network Places". Choose "Advanced" from the
menu at the top of the window, choose "Advanced settings..." from the
dropddown menu. Make sure the Primaray Nic is at the top of the priority
list and not the loopback adapter (use arrows icons on the right side to
adjust). The Loopback Adapter should be last at the bottom.
