hi,

i have a windows 98 laptop at home (my wife's) that i would like to
get
on my home network. I use a Netgear rp614 with a baystack hub behind
it. when i set it up for dhcp i cannot get an address from my
192.168.0.0/24 range that is the default on the netgear. it recieves
a 169.something. This address has nothing to do with my connection.

what can i do to get it to pull from my 192.168.0.0/24? I am not
opposed to putting a static ip on it. I tried setting up a static,
but beeing more familiar with win2k and xp i was unable to get the
darn thing to communicate. any ideas? can i specify 192.168.0.1 as
my dhcp server in the registry or anything?

thanks in advance!!!
jason

The 169.254.x.y address range is an Autonet IP address.
Windows 98 (and later) machines wll use an IP address on the 169.254.x.y
range if the machine is unable to find a DHCP server on the network.

Check the Netgear router to make sure that DHCP service is running and
configured properly.

Assuming that the router's DHCP server is working properly, something
must be wrong with the laptop's network connection. It could be the
network adapter, cable, router port, or software configuration.

Try a different cable and router port. Look in Device Manager to see
if there's a problem with the network adapter. If the network adapter
is configured to automatically sense speed and duplex settings, try
explicitly setting them. Start with 10 Mb and half duplex. If that
works, try 100 mb and full duplex.
