Win 98 & Win XP Networking Issues

I previously had Win ME installed on my laptop, husbands pc has Win
98. We were networked with no problems. Recently I purchased the full
version of Win XP for my laptop and want to network the two again.

After some trial and error I finally got the disc that was created
with the Networking Wizard to run on my husbands pc and after
monkeying around his pc can now see, and use my files and printers.
But my laptop cannot see his pc.

Before you tell me to place his files on share - please know that they
already are. I can ping his pc, but he can't ping mine. I can't see
his pc, but he can see my laptop. Odd!

I tried to go into the properties for my file and print sharing, but
the properties is grayed out. I can only click on install or
uninstall. When I try to click install, it tells me that the drivers
cannot be found. When I insert the Win XP disc - it still says they
cannot be found.

Is the File and Print share the issue - does anyone know what I need
to do to fix this? I have gone through all the troubleshooting help
files and I am about to pull my hair out over this. Can someone help?

I had a similar problem when I networked my Win98SE
computer to my new WinXP computer. After literally weeks
of trying to find solutions, a tech support person
mentioned that it could be my anti-virus program or my
firewall. It turned out that I had to let Zone Alarm
know that it was okay for these two machines to
communicate. You might want to look into that if you
have a firewall.

I am working on a similar problem with networking an xp and a 98se computers and also found my "File and print sharing" greyed out. in your xp computer, open Network connections, click on the advance folder on the top, click on the advanced settings, open the adapters and bindings tab, and make sure that the proper protocol check box is checked. My "file and print sharing" is no longer greyed out. Note: my probem is that I have a router connecting 3 computers with my cable modem. My router works fine for the internet but I am playing with the TCP and IPX protocols to keep my file and print part of my computers invisible to the internet
