Hi
we have a small local area network made of 18 pcs
recently I have added a new pc running on win 98 to our
network be only used as a file server, and we all are
using it as a mapped drive (X) but the problem I have run
into is some of the pcs not all of them some time that
they try to go to that net work drive their pc locks up,
needless to say that they also running on win 98, prtocol
used is tcp/ip, there must be something about win 98 &
being mapped by too many pcs, or is it?

Thanks

Matt

Do all pcs have the same hardware?
Not sure how your network is set up but if they are the same swap a nic or 2
to see if it follows the swapped nic. Thats the easiest start, take 2 secs.

Yes
All computers have the same hardware, runing on 98, same
protocol, some working fine all the time but a couple of
them locks up on x drive, I have tried changing network
card, reinstalling protocols, but those same computers
still acting the same way.

Maybe they're trying to access common files -- do the machines
all have unique users associated with them?

is it always the same couple of pcs that are 'locking up'?
if so, i would ghost an image from a working pc on to the 'faulty' one to
see if it is software.
then u know what u r dealing with.. hardware or s/w. only take 5 mins to
ghost. u may want to ghost to a spare hdd if u have one lying around just
in case its not.
