I've a Win 2003 (R1) Standard edition.
Automatic updates caused a big troble on it, so I re-installed it and I want
to manually instal patches and updates.
Is there a reliable list of 'security patches' to install?
Thanks in advance
Agostino

Hello Agostino,

What is your problem with automatic updates, never had this kind of problems,
that you describe. If you specify more details, i will be sure , we can find
a solution. I often install new servers/workstations and use automatic updates
without trouble.

Best regards

If you are responsable of a 'server health', meaning by so the hardware and
the windows health, i agree with you that automatic updates are the best
choiche. Vendors often agree with this 'policy'.

If you are responsible for the IT as a whole, than the problem is different.
I have a Citrix Presentation server that is not compatible with some new
features that can be veichled trought automatic updates. What should I do?

There is then another problem. A server which is NOT exposed to internet/web
as run unpatched an without problems for years. This server should be
auto-updated? I think no.

If a principle says 'for security, always update' another principle says
'don't touch your running system'.
The risk is the 'discriminant': if the risk became higher, the solution is
the first. If the risk is low, the solution in my opinion is the second one.
Thanks

Hello Agostino,

For the not connected server, this will be really useful:
http://www.heise-security.co.uk/foru...orum_id=108277 http://www.heise-security.co.uk/foru...orum_id=108277

Even it is in german, the Offline update 4.1 works like a charm and is totally
free. We use it withput any problem on our not internet servers/workstations.

Best regards
