We are in a WIN 2003 R2 enivronment, stand alone server non-active directory
(this is not a domain controller), workgroups are set the same on the server
and client. Having difficutly mapping drives from a WIndows XP Pro SP2
machine. Can ping the server by name and by IP. When attempting to access a
shared folded, file, printer or the server we are prompted for a username and
password which is typical. Enter any user name and password, including the
machine administrator account and access is not allowed. No apparent entries
in the even logs. Just continually prompted for a username and password.
Verified that nothing has been set to deny in the GPO.

any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

make sure you have file and printer sharing by use net share command on the server. If it looks good, do a simple test by mapping the drive on the server itself.
