Dear all,

I have discovered something weird in XP... the scenario is this; I
have one XP Pro box and one win2003 box, both connected together via a
direct serial connection using PPP. The XP Pro box connection is
firewalled, but I allow ping request echo for that particular
connection.

The weird thing is that when I establish the connection from the XP
Pro box to win2003 box, I tried to ping from win2003 to XP. The first
few seconds of pinging went fine... then after about roughly 10 - 30
seconds, the XP box seemed not responding to the ping request. Why is
that??

I have to say the problem experienced only occurred when I am using
computer name as the ping parameter. If I use IP address, the ping is
fine after 30 seconds.

This problem goes away when I turned off the firewall... is it a known
issue in XP???

A word of advice...

XP firewall sucks. I have ran into more werid occurences and things
that dont make sense when it was on. I turned it off completely. I
even put a Group Policy in at work to turn it off on all our
machines. I mean your far further ahead to get a hardware firewall.

Just my opinion

Hello,

Well, I guess buying an hardware firewall is not an option. We can get
around this problem if we use IP address, but not computer name... it
is just that we have to hardcode every XP Pro meachine... it is
disappointing to find out XP firewall is buggy...

Any other third-party alternative?
