Win 2000/ME ping only in one direction possible

Hello,

I am trying to set up a peer to peer network with one Win 2000 Pro and one
Win ME computer. IPX works fine, but I want TCP.

The problem: TCP Games do not work. I tried ping and tracert. The strange
thing is: Both computers can ping themselves, the Win 2000 PC can ping the
me one and gets an answer. But the Win ME cannot ping the 2000 PC. It can
resolve the name, I see the correct IP, but then there is a timeout. Same
with tracert.

I think ping should work in both directions. Browsed the internet, read a
lot about firewalls, but I have no one installed (and never had). And I
think 2000 does not have a build-in.

What can I do? Please help me!

Thanks,

Jochen

Ping is an example of an IGMP packet. Is W2K filtering out IGMP packets at
the NIC?

You didn't mention if a router exists between the systems and if a dns
server is present on the network. Consider the case where a DNS server
succesfully resolves the WinME's request for a W2K ipaddress. Just because
WinME now knows the W2K's ipaddress does not guarentee that the later will
be reachable.

example:
WinME 10.10.2.2 subnet 255.255.255.0
W2K 10.10.3.1 subnet 255.0.0.0

W2K can ping WinME, but WinME can't ping W2K

Hi,

thanks for your help. I tried it with and without a router, I think a direct
connection should be easier.
Settings:

Win ME: 192.168.111.233
Subnet: 255.255.0.0

2000 pro:
192.168.111.221
255.255.0.0

The router has a DNS, direct connection no one, I think (or has 2k one??)

Jochen

OK, looks good from here, assuming that no firewall or tcp/ip filtering is
occuring at W2K, i'ld suggest reinstalling the tcp/ip protocol on WinME.
