Proof-of-Concept Labs Take WiMAX to School, March 2007, Telephony's
Guide to WiMAX
When lab testing and WiMAX are mentioned in the same breath, the
discussion usually has to do with interoperability certification
testing performed at independent labs. However, two labs being opened
by the WiMAX Forum’s Applications Working Group, or AWG, in the next
few months take WiMAX out of the interop lab and into proof-of-concept
environments involving real consumers. In both cases, WiMAX will
literally be taken to school. The proof-of-concept labs being set up
by the Application Business Task Group within the AWG will be located
at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, and at the
University of California-Berkeley, with students at both campuses as
the lab participants, according to Howard Liu, chairman of the ABTG
and an executive at the Walt Disney Co.

This Year, The Work Of The WiMAX, March 2007, Telephony's Guide to
WiMAX
Forum will be apparent in the first commercial Mobile WiMAX
deployments and the ongoing market evolution of Fixed WiMAX. Ron
Resnick, president of the WiMAX Forum, recently spoke to Telephony’s
Editor-in-Chief Dan O’Shea about the forum’s efforts. On the WiMAX
Forum’s current certification schedule for Mobile WiMAX gear: We’re
shooting for the first half of the year for the completion of Wave 1.
Where {multiple input/multiple} outputgets involved in Wave 2, we are
looking at the later part of the second half of this year, in Q4.
There is massive effort to make that happen, lots of pressure by the
operators. Will that be done? I don’t have any report in front of me
that says it can’t be done.

Editors Corner: FierceWiFi WiMAX Beat, March 28, FierceWiFi E-
Newsletter
It was standing room only during the educational session about WiMAX
at CTIA Wireless 2007. My back is killing me. WiMAX is probably the
most hyped technology at this point, so I wanted to see if the hype
matched up with reality. Of course, all eyes are on Sprint Nextel, and
everyone hung on to every word Barry West, Sprint CTO and president of
4G mobile broadband, had to say about the company's deployment
plans."We're not building another cellular network," he said. "We're
mobilizing the Internet." As a result, West said the operator was
working hard to ensure that it moves away from the device subsidy trap
and walled gardens prevalent today on mobile networks. "You pay for
the device, and you can do whatever you want with it," he said.

Where is Mobile WiMAX Today?, March 22, WiMax.com
802.16 has undergone a fundamental shift in perception since the first
specification was approved more than three years ago. The incipient
standard has gone from being a largely invisible "fixed" wireless
standard to a now omnipresent future mobile specification. We will
assess the paths and chances of success for mobile WiMAX and shed
light on recent mobile trends. Our first task in doing so requires us
to ask a fundamental question: why would major carriers choose to
abandon their existing migration paths in favor of a new and untested
mobile standard?

quarter alone, including $45.8 million in revenue from Mobile WiMAX, a
technology that was only certified early last year.“2006 was a
landmark year for the WiMAX industry, with service provider trials
moving to service launch phase in many areas, fixed WiMAX deployments
accelerating rapidly in developing countries, and mobile WiMAX
products coming to market for the first time,” commented Infonetics

Wireless Industry Gears Up For WiMAX, March 26, CNET News
As top executives gather in Orlando, Fla., this week at the CTIA
Wireless 2007 trade show, an emerging technology called WiMax will
likely be a hot topic among carriers and equipment makers from around
the world. Many, in fact, are gearing up to deploy WiMax services.
Mobile operators have barely rolled out their new third-generation
wireless networks, and they're already talking about the fourth
generation. As next-generation cellular technologies--including those
of the Long Term Evolution project, whose mission is to guide the
evolution of GSM cellular networks--have trouble getting off the
ground, the industry has been turning its attention toward the WiMax
packet-based technology.

'WiMAX to Spread Only after TD-SCDMA Gets on Track' : US Yankee Group
Analyzes Wireless Broadband Market in China, March 26, Tech On
Yankee Group Research, Inc., a research company of the US, has
unveiled its latest survey results on the state of fixed and mobile
WiMAX services in China. According to the results, despite increasing
adoption of fixed WiMAX across China, mobile WiMAX services are not
likely to start immediately since the Chinese government does not wish
radical change and therefore is not advancing the allotment of a radio
frequency band to mobile WiMAX. However, if "TD-SCDMA," a Chinese
version 3G specification expected for service start in the near
future, gets on track, mobile WiMAX may possibly have a chance to
spread as well, Yankee Group said.

the largest UK cable operator. The deal would reportedly add an
additional 570,000 fixed-line broadband customers from Pipex, but more
importantly, it would provide Virgin with access to Pipex Wireless,
the WiMAX joint venture between Intel and Pipex. Virgin operates an
MVNO mobile business, and an acquisition of Pipex would give the
company access to the national 3.5 GHz spectrum owned by Pipex. The
Register also reported that BT has received permission from UK
regulators to proceed with a bid for Pipex. Other bidders for Pipex,
which is represented by UBS, are said to include Sky TV, Tiscali and
Orange.

IBM's Promotion Of Metrozone WiMAX Leads To Texas Deal, March 29,
WiMAX Trends
IBM has shown an increasingly keen interest, over the past few years,
in the potential for its integration business in the metrozone market,
and now it is set to take advantage of this sector's evolution from
focusing on best effort, socially oriented networks, to providing
carrier class services. As we have noted before, this evolution has
exposed some inadequacies in Wi-Fi for delivery of high value
services, operators are looking to combine mesh with other technologies
such as WiMAX. This move to more complex and high risk systems will be
alluring for integrators such as IBM, which is harnessing WiMAX to
boost the value of metrozone deals, as indicated by its latest win,
with the city of Brownsville, Texas.

Wi-Lan Exits Equipment, Highlighting Patents Issue For WiMAX Players,
March 22, WiMAX.com
In a standards-based equipment market, volume is key to
competitiveness, and smaller suppliers will only survive if they have
significant intellectual property over and above the standard. The Wi-
Fi market is in the process of consolidating and it will soon be
WiMAX' turn. We have already seen Proxim and Terabeam merging, and now
Wi-Lan is staking its future entirely on its patents portfolio, and
seeking an acquirer for its equipment business. With the certification
process for 802.16-2004 fixed WiMAX kit speeding up, and mobile
802.16e on the horizon, this will certainly be the first of many
upheavals in the once cosy world of broadband wireless vendors.

Open base station efforts spread to WiMAX, March 22, WiMAX.com
It is only nine months since the Open Base Station Architecture
Initiative added WiMAX specifications to its standards platform, but
the technology is becoming increasingly important in its roadmap, with
over one-third of its 130 members now actively working with WiMAX.The
emergence of carrier systems that are united by IP but fragmented
between different physical networks is a boost for OBSAI since it
makes it even more urgent to reduce equipment and development costs
through standard integrated platforms. Thus it is unsurprising that
the initiative has leapt eagerly on WiMAX and the prospect of combined
802.16/3G networks.

WiMax.com Tech Spotlight - Advantages of Commercial WiMAX Test
Systems, March 22, Wi MAX.com
A major testing decision for WiMAX access and core network vendors and
carriers is the classic build-or-buy decision. Should they develop in-
house test tools, or purchase a commercial tool suite?Increasingly
across the software industry, the answer is to purchase a third-party
tool set. The trend in business is to focus precious resources on the
company's core mission, and to purchase, outsource, sub-contract, or
otherwise delegate other tasks to specialist companies.
Besides this generic business rationale, there are sound, specific
reasons for deciding to utilize third-party tools in your WiMAX lab.

WiMAX Will Be 'Moderately Disruptive' For Telecoms Mart, March 26,
Business Times
FITCH Ratings last week said the emergence of WiMAX services in
Malaysia would be "moderately disruptive" for the telecommunications
market over the longer term. Malaysia recently awarded the much sought-
after WiMAX spectrum to four small bidders, sidelining bids from three
large telcos, namely Telekom Malaysia, Maxis Communications and DiGi.
Fitch said while Maxis should remain relatively unaffected there would
be implications for TM's fixed broadband operations as well as for
DiGi's longer term competitive position in mobile communication.
