windows XP

Router: Thompson SpeedTouch 580

WiFi adapter Netgear WG111v2 (USB 2.0)

I am having trouble setting up a WiFi link from my son's PC to the
router.

if you look at the Netgear WiFi wizard on his PC it says it has found
the router, 85% signal strength, right channel etc. - all looks good.

it says the ip address to the router is 169.254.185.31

but my router assigns addresses in the range 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.255

i have no idea why/where it is picking this address.

i have changed the address in the properties box of the adapter
(Internet protocol tcp/ip), by un-checking the use automatic settings
and typing in the following settings

ip address: 10.0.0.100
sub net mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 10.0.0.138

and added the DNS server numbers i got from my router.

i got the above numbers from ipconfig.

the ip address is not used by any other PC (at the moment)

can anyone give me any advice as to what to try next

thanks

That's Windows speak for 'I couldn't get an IP address' from a DHCP server.

If ipconfig returns those numbers then you are part way there. Can you
ping your router:

ping 10.0.0.138

Is security on or off for the wireless connection? Best to have it off
while you set it up and then add it.

Windows wireless networking is finicky, are you using the latest drivers
and firmware?

no, it says it has assigned 169....
this is self-assigned as it has failed to get an address from the dhcp
server.

either the router is not set to allocate an address or the pc has failed to
get one (communications failure for want of a better term)

WPA. WEP key incorrect, mac filtering on (and blocked), (wrong wi-fi - 85%
is low, try sticking the two next to each other - should now be 100%)

The point is, are you talking to the right sid - you'll know if it is or
not.

HTH

That's good information I didn't know.

I got this info. from my laptop which connects without any problems.

I also connected my desktop to this router without any problems.

I currently have 3 systems set up to access the Internet through the
router and they all work OK.

This is why I am surprised that I am having problems. I am using the
same procedure I have used with my other systems, so I thought it would
be a simple thing to do.

I will try pinging from his system.

I have turned his firewall off.

I have the correct ssid and wpa password.

I am not sure I am using the windows stuff I think I am using the
netgear software stuff - if this makes any sense at all.

Also;

it all works at his nan's house where he connects to the netgear router.
He bought a router/usb adapter package.

It was a bit tricky to set up but once we sorted it out it has worked
ever since.

But now he is with us for a while so I am trying to get it set up here
so we can get rid of the cable that is trailing along the floor at the
moment

I was surprised that it didn't work when I manually put the numbers in I
must admit.

Windows!!!!!!!!! Or is it netgear that is causing the problem

That is useful info - thanks.

In the router the table that says what is allowed says that his adapter
(mac code) is allowed.

But I take the point that something in there might be causing the lack
of communication.

It is only 12 feet apart. 85% should be OK though.

The ssid is OK and we have re-entered the wpa key a million times.

I am loathed to mess with the router settings in case a bugger it up for
the other 3 systems on the network.

No, that's called an "automatic private IP address" which is what
happens when the PC cannot pick up an IP address from a DHCP server.

Because something is not working properly.

APIPA address, can't get one from the router so I'll make one up. Quick
and dirty, does the router display the network encryption key in
plaintext? If so, run a patch cable from the PC to the router, log into
the router on the afflicted PC then cut and paste the network key into
the WiFi adapter dialogue or, alternatively, create a new key on the
afflicted machine and copy and paste it into the router. XP sometimes
does funny things with WiFi keys.
