WiFi usage/speed question

My set up is at the moment just my laptop connected to my desktop
computer, the internet is connected to my lappy and the desktop is
nothing but a hard drive server at the moment, so the only use the
WiFi gets is file transfers.

Both networks are reading a 11Mbps connection. Now when I open Task
manager and look at the usage of the network it only shows that at max
50% utilisation. Seeing as there is nothing else using the network why
isn't it using the full amount ?

Or has this nothing to do with it, it seems very slow for file
transfers, I'm sure a bluetooth network I set up the other month was
quicker, maybe not in connection speed reported but the files
transferred quicker. or maybe I'm just remembering it all wrong.

Network mode is 802.11 ad hoc, transfer rate Auto and both machines
show a 100% signal strength.

TIA

Two reasons: the overhead of the wireless connection (which is greater when
you use encryption), and the fact that Windows file sharing is unable to
saturate the network.
