Can anyone explain how WIFI works at Starbucks/Kinko's.

Do you need a WIFI enabled PC or will they lend you a wifi card?

Do you need to use their ISP and if so, how much do they charge?

Thanks

If you happen to already have a T-Mobile phone, it's $19.95 per month.

And Starbucks still charges you $3 for a cup of coffee. :-( You'd think
they'd offer cheap/free surfing to get you in to indulge in pricey lattes &
munchies. ;-)

I came across a Starbucks recently (only one near me) and was able to
associate with the AP and get to the Internet without any signup or fee. Is
it not supposed to work that way?

All the information is on the T-Mobile web-site. Generally
speaking they have plans such as "Unlimited" and "Pay as
You Go." For example you can go to Starbucks, turn on
your computer, turn on Wi-Fi (802.11b), sign up and surf
for .10/minute with a minimum of 60 mnutes. It's provided
by T-Mobile, but when you are in ,i.e., Starbucks, Borders, etc. their page
will come up and you can sign up.
Your own computer with 802.11b. Good Luck. This all
applies to the area where I am located, but probably good in other areas.

There's a growing body of thought that agrees with you. Some analysts
are predicting that within two years, places like Starbucks, hotels,
etc. will be offering connectivity for free, as an enticement to get
your business.

Me, I'm not so sure. Until cell phones became ubiquitous, payphones were
a modest moneymaker for many businesses. Hotels still charge a nominal
fee for most phone calls made from your room. I know, the two media
don't really compare, but I still see the businesses charging a nominal
fee for access, if only to offset their costs.

Nope, you're supposed to pay. Maybe a few of the Starbucks roll out
their wireless as a "demo" for a short time before enabling the
signup?

I use the T-Mobile WiFi at Starbucks and Borders and it works pretty
well by the way - just a little pricey...
