WiFi Router and ADSL Modem Router

I have a D-Link DI-614+ WiFi access point and 4-port ethernet switch, and
a Netgear DG814 ADSL modem and 4-port ethernet switch. What I want to do
is run the WiFi point downstream from the modem so that I can use some of
its hardware firewall capabilities. However, connecting one of the modem's
ethernet ports to the WiFi's WAN port doesn't work. Any ideas or pointers
appreciated.

You'd have to manual configure the DI614 to accept the IP presented by the
DG814 on it's WAN port. Yes it can work, I did something similar between my
Solwise SAR30 & my old Netgear RO318 (& had to set the WAN interface
manually to get it to work)....

It could lead to other problems but one step at a time....

Not sure about this. The DG814 (modem) doesn't have a WAN port, but the
DI614 (WiFi) does. If you mean that I should set an address on the DI614's
WAN port then what should it be - I'm using a 192.168.0.n setup. The DI614
allows me to set a static address on the WAN port, or a dynamic address
which is "obtained automatically from your ISP". Incidentally, the DG814
is set up as the DHCP server.
