Wifi off standard DBS antenna used for TV?

I will be moving to a new "high rise" 20 floor apartment building, and
will have DirectTV in my apartment, with a roof mounted DBS antenna.

Is there anyway to run coax off the DBS dish (which is used for TV and
will be "stock") and feed it to my computer and use it for wi-fi also?

Bad idea. Lots of problems. DBS works at 12-13Ghz. 802.11b wireless
is at 2.4Ghz. That's too large a frequency difference to use the
dish. The dish will also be pointed at a satellite, rather than whom
you're talking to, so that's not going to work.

You could build a diplexer, which allows you to use the same coax for
the DBS IF frequency (950-1550Mhz) and 2.4GHz on the same cable. You
would need a proper antenna near the dish. However, the loss of
RG-6/u at 2.4Ghz is quite high. You won't have much signal left after
a typical rooftop coax run.

If it is going to be used for DirecTV, no. The dish would have to be
pointed toward the WiFi with which you want to connect.
If you can mount a separate dish or antenna with you own cable run, then
you might ahve something practicable.


If it is not going to be used for DirecTV, and you are free to repoint it,
and take the DirecTV electronics off of it, yes, you could use the naked
dish. The signal loss in the coax might wipe out any gain the dish could
provide, though, so it's probably just not a good idea.
