WiFi issues under Vista Home Basic

A band new laptop I bought refuses to connect to my home WiFi network.

===============================================
WiFi Router:
Thompson speedtouch 580 ADSL

laptop that works:
ACER using WPS-PSK, TKIP, windows XP

laptop that doesn't work:
Fujitus Siemans Esprimo, Vista Home Basic
WPA-Personal, TKIP (I assume this is the same as WPS-PSK!!!)
Turned off Vista's Firewall
No Anti-Virus installed
===============================================

The Vista PC (the one that refuses to connect to the WiFi network) has
updated it self (via a ethernet cable plugged into the router) I can
access the Internet if I plug the cable in. Just the WiFi connection
that is causing problems.

It claims the network key is incorrect.

I don't know if/how I can get the network key out of the router - but I
am sure the one I have written down is correct)

I know I am typing it correctly. I know it is case sensitive.

I have ticked the show characters box to see the security key.

I have it written down and have used it on 3 other PCs on my network.
(one Win 2000, two XP systems)

I am NOT broadcasting the SSID from the router so I manually entered
it into the Vista configuration screen,
I selected WPA-Personal, TKIP,
and entered my key

but no connection

I have rebooted a few time and powered down/up the router.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Any help much appreciated.

SEE BELOW

This is my first encounter with Vista, I was hoping it was going to be
trouble free....

the wired network runs if I plug a cable in but not the WiFi.

Still claims the network key is wrong!

But the key is printed under the router and I have used it to set up my
other 3 PCs to connect to this network.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

OK.

Thanks for that.

I will have a look and see what I can find.

I have a green light on the front of the laptop next to the aerial
symbol (I pressed Fn + F1 to get that to light up - it was off when I
took it out of the box) so I assumed it was turned on.

Also in available networks, it sees 4 WiFi networks, my router with a
signal strength of 100% ( I am only 4 feet from the router) and 3 WiFi
networks of my neighbours - I think he has BT home hub and play station
networks stuff..

So I assume this all meant that the radio was working.

obviously it doesn't.

I will investigate more in the morning.

Thanks for the help.

right click my computer
manage
device manager

expand network adapters - is the Atheros adapter shown as enabled or
disabled?

are you using Windows or some 3rd party utility to manage the
wireless?

did you change the name of your wireless network (SSID) from the
default? does a neighbor have a wireless network with the same name
as yours?

Thank you everyone for your help.

I tried all the things suggested.

I then took it into work and it connected to one of our unprotected
routers, so I decided that the laptop was OK.

I eventually updated the firmware in my router, SpeedTouch 580

there have been a few people with this router having problems after
updating to Vista.

It now works.

Thanks again

I am having the same problem with my new dell laptop. It is exactly the same. I have tried everything. My old laptop with xp is fine. I did read somewhere that it may need SP1 but have not tried yet. If you figure it out please let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!
