WiFi Help Required: Slow Speed Internet...

Hi, was wondering if anyone cold help me out here? I'm using a Sky
rebranded Netgear DG834GT router and have a 16mb ADSL account.

When connected either my desktop, my own laptop or my company laptop via
the router's ethernet port (singly, nothing else connected and using
bandwidth) I get about 10-12mbps according to a couple of online tests.
Not 16mb, but not bad considering distance to exchange etc. etc.

However, if I connect either laptop by wifi (and again, make sure
everything else is disconnected and not using bandwidth) I get 3.5mbps
each time.

The laptops are set to default wifi performance mode, so when plugged
into the mains they go into 'high performance/poor battery'. I've also
tried changing the setting so they're in high performance mode all the
time but it made no difference so I assume the default is working correctly.

The router is switched into 802.11b/g mode and both laptops report being
connected at 54mbps so this seems to be ok.

I have a wifi router for my (soon to be switched off) cable account.
I've disabled the wireless on this router to eliminate any clashing
there, although I've made sure they were set to different channels so
there should be no problems there (I'm not an expert...)

I'm connecting via WPA and both laptops are running Windows XP Pro

So, any ideas what the problem could be?

54 mbps is a lie that these companies selling Wi-Fi tell you. Just because
it says 54 mbps doesn't mean the processor in the access point (AP)/router
can actually process the throughput that fast.

I have this issue too and it needs to be publicized more. I have a
connection that tops out at about 20 mbps and when I am on a wired
workstation, I get every bit of it on the Speakeasy speed test site. When I
then try on my NetGear WG302 I get 5.5 mbps tops. It has the latest firmware
and this happens even with the AP has no security set as a test.

I have tried this also with a NetGear WAG102, which has the same Intel
XScale 422 processor (boy is this hard to find info), so naturally it only
gave me the same 5.5 mbps. So I tried 2 APs, 2 different cables, 2 different
computers, and even 2 different switches, and nothing changed. It is all
about the ability of the AP to actually process data, and this was more or
less confirmed by NetGear tech support when he was describing true router
throughput as a comparison. I asked him to forward my concerns to the
engineering department.

I am going to set up a wire to my main work location.

Ah ok. Different question then: I have a Linksys ADSL wifi router sat in
the drawer which I *know* processes as advertised.

My broadband is 16mb which makes it ADSL2+? Just to save disappointment,
what will happen if I connected up the Linksys? Would the connection
drop back to ADSL, or not work, or something else?

Do you have any 802.11 b stuff on your network ??

If not you will get a better speed if running it in just 802.11 'G' mode,
but as said the numbers are (as I call them) sales man numbers and often
need the point moving up one.

I get between 9~12 MB/sec from my WAP56G's, but only when I run them in
the 'G' mode, when a friend has their 'B' laptop involved it drops down to
5~6. I live in an old house with at least 24" (36" for some) thick solid
walls, so I have always needed a very good wireless AP/cards and run wired
for most of my network.

I first got a KCorp KLG 575 because it beat everything else I saw it
tested against (2003/4) and with its own cards on their turbo mode could
go even faster (12~14), but they had no support and the unit went back 3
times before I gave up on it (the PSU was no good) its a shame as I have
yet to see or have anything as good.
