Is it possible to use wireless networking with dialup?

My brother uses AOL, he has only dialup service, and only a laptop
with built-in WIFI. Is there a router that has a built-in dialup
capability? Eventually he will have either DSL or cable modem.

TIA

Pete

HI!

Yes, a Router with dial-up, and WI-FI as well, then your laptop get the
router to dial on demand when you try to access the internet.

ISDN Routers I know there are plenty of, not shure about "analog"
telephone-routers..

The SMC 7004AWBR is an 802.11b wireless router with both Ethernet and
serial WAN ports, so you can run it with an external dialup modem or
with cable/DSL. This would solve your problem and would still be a
useful router if you upgrade to cable or DSL in the future.

Do you know of any routers with a built-in modem, or is that
capability too much to ask for in this day and age?

Dunno about dial-up, but for ADSL the Netgear DG824M (the DG814 if you
can bear to be without wireless).

See if you can find a Lucent/Agere RG1000 somewhere. It has a builtin
modem, 11b radio and 1 ethernet port.

Kind regards,
Johan

I had the impression that the AirPort only worked with Macs, and not with XP.

You could add a cheap access point to this $50 device :

We did it for years before cable internet service came to town. Take
a look at www.smc.com. I used their basic router /w RS232 port and an
external modem to dial up my ISP. The router did the PPP and from
there it looked just like any DSL or cable modem connection just a lot
slower!

For the wireless part I just pluged a Linksys WAP11 into the router
and had at it. SMC may make a wireless router /w dial-up but I am not
sure.

Now, if AOL can not do a standard PPP connection (without any of the
AOL software installed) then you may need to find another ISP.

Let me know if you have any questions and I would be glad to answer
them if I can.
