Wifi card blows out network

I apologize if this is not the right newsgroup for this question, but
I'm not seeing anything show up in ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad where I originally
posted this question, so I thought somebody here might know something
even though this is not, strictly speaking, a "networking" problem.

I'm working on a friends Thinkpad 760XL. It worked pretty well so I
added an Xterasys wifi card (http://www.xterasys.com/xn2411b.htm) to
connect it to her LAN so her daughter could do some basic Internet and
word processing things. The card configures and works well, but
Win98SE's networking and "plug-n-play" are being difficult. I made a
quick search of the Web and newsgroups via Google, but I'm not even sure
how to query for it.

Specifically, whenever the wifi card is removed from the PCMCIA slot
(whether the card stopped with the PCI applet or just removed, whether
the machine is shut down or powered up) then reinserted and the system
rebooted, Windows loses the adaptor and recognizes the card as new
hardware. It then proceeds to ask for a driver, and when satisfied,
reboots normally.

However, two wifi adaptors and TCP/IP protocols then appear in the
networking properties, and they step on each other so that neither will
function despite the fact that one of them (the original?) appears to be
configured correctly.

The solution is to delete both 802.11b adaptors and reinstall all the
network components (adaptor and protocols) then configure them from
scratch -- major pain. After reinstallation I can reboot the machine
and shut down all I want, as long as the card isn't removed the machine
connects the network normally every time. Is there some way to prevent
the machine from losing the card when it is removed? Am I doing
something wrong in the setup? Is a battery dying?

Has anyone seen anything like this before?
