Those are two separate statments ;-) 1KM isn't very far.
I would take a look at http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/cantenna/cantenna.htm
as well as the other pages at that site, and http://www.freeantennas.com

A tin from a supermarket will do that no problems.

Well, I wanna connect two houses together in an sub-urban like environment.
If possible I wanna connect with others as well. Would it be possible to
just have one antenna and then connect to various connections within a lets
say 5KM radius with a standard wireless adapter?

Hey, apparently that URL is number 17 in Google for a search on "pet
food accessories"

Of at least it was a few days ago when I was asked if I wanted it
linking to a whole load of pet store websites.

So i could make a cantenna that would have lots of range? Would i need a
direct line of sight? I could place it on a rough. Would the other end
need an antennea too?

It doesnt really go over what kind of range I will get. Is there a
paticular cantenna on their that you suggest?
Will i have problems with houses or tree blocking the line of sight? Does
it matter if there issnt a clear line of sight?

Yes
Yes
Yes although the other end doesn't have to be the same type of antenna,
depends on what you want to do exactly.

David.
