Sorry if this is basic fare, but.. I have the following set-up:
Satellite Internet connection > Ethernet cable > Laptop 1 > Belkin WiFi
AP > Other WiFi Laptops. If I wish to take the Laptop 1 out of the
loop, therefore enabling all the PCs to access the Internet connection
independently of the Laptop 1, do I vave to install a router or
something, or will the access point act as a Internet hub? It has a LAN
port on the rear, but this states that it for connection into a Wired
LAN. Sorry for the length...

If you take the laptop out you will definately need a router to replace it.
However, correct me if I'm wrong (again!) but don't you also need a phone
connection for your downlink and the satelite is used only for your uplink?
If this is the case you may wish to consider using a dedicated pc. A low end
machine will do and if you can get one second hand it will probably be no
more expensive than getting a router.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for your reply. Yeh, I was thinking maybe the s7h PC might be
the better option! In response to your comment, No I have Sat Up &
Down. I live in Spain, in the countryside & we have no Landlines at
all! I achieve 1024D/256U via Satellite.

I've never heard of anyone using a router with satellite and don't know much
about it. But if the sat-link appears as a normal DSL line then a router /
modem combination (AFAIC) would be a better option. Better security and
easier to set up netwoks. I was only thinking of a pc if you needed a phone
line for your uplink.

Out of interest how much does the sat-link cost ?

Hmm, It's not cheap. 3000€ for the Kit (1M dish, LNB Carrier, Modem&
Cabling), then anywhere between 70-400€ per month subscription
depending upon the Bandwith & Contention Ratio you're looking for! It's
pretty smooth, & is 24/7. But, when it's the only feasible & reliable
option!!
