I have an SMC 7004VWBR wireless router, which appears to have an unusual
problem. I discovered the problem when I was trying to determine why news
articles would occasionally take a long time to download. Using Ethereal,
I found that the router was doing arp requests for the NNTP server, which
is a few hops away from my ISP's gateway. Since the server is not on a
network that the router is directly connected to, this should never happen.
All requests for remote networks are supposed to be passed to the gateway
(default route). On the local side, I see several unanswered NNTP
requests. I have a problem report into SMC, but despite a couple of
suggestions, they haven't yet been able to resolve the problem. Has anyone
else experienced this? Though I haven't checked, it may also be an issue
with other protocols. The problem occurs with both the original software
and the WPA update. Also, I can't traceroute through the router. Ethereal
shows the UDP packets heading out and the TTL expired ICMP messages coming
back, but the responses do not appear on the local side of the router.
tnx jk
