Wi-fi at UK Airports?

I noticed while at Gatwick last month that the terminal building was
wi-fi live. T-Mobile and a couple of other providers were making this
facility available. However, although I could get a strong signal, I
could not download anything. Assuming this is a freely available facilty
for all who wish to use it in the airport (I may have got that wrong of
course), what settings does one need to apply to get downloading?

It's not free. If you open up your browser and try to go anywhere you will
be redirected to the appropriate login screen - time to get your credit
card out.

Not a help in this case but I was amazed to discover that WiFi at
Dubai was free!
