Is there any system that acts like AIM but uses ad-hoc 802.11x
connections? i.e. you don't need an outside internet connection? it
would just show you wireless clients around you and users could chat
with them

(sitting here describing it, i can think of a million problems and
limitations -- but has anyone though about it?)

iChat uses Rendezvous which hopefully all systems will be endowed with soon.

There is a programe out there called "AP Chat" (by Digital Matrix)

http://home.comcast.net/~jay.deboer/apchat/

I came accross it a few days ago, but there are no AP's out here in the UK
(near me) who are techy, and I think am talking to mysef!! lol...
You can broadcast a message so if a WD is driving about with an AP and is
using AP Chat he then could Chat and bobs your uncle!, purely "Open" chat
mind you..

Looks interesting

So does NSSpyglass!

http://home.comcast.net/~jaydeboer/

It doesnt like my setup though with the SMC2635W, and XP-Home, both look
like they could be still a bit buggy... worth a try though
