I have channels 1 - 13 so why worry which channel to pick?
Why not select auto or am I missing a point?

if you choose 1 you can avoid all the default 6 and 11 people.

1,6 and 11 overlap a tiny amount

1,5,9, 13 overlap a little bit

no point being on 10 as you bleed all over the people on 9 anyway, and
vice versa

If there's no other wireless networks in the vicinity it doesn't really
matter. You should generally use 1, 6 or 11 to make sure there is no
interferance between neighbouring networks but once you get more than three
it gets a bit cluttered.

My neighbours have already taken 1, 6 & 11 - what's my best choice?

David.

14 :-)

8/9 or 3/4 will get less interference than competing with them
directly.
