I can't get Adsl even though its 4 km along roads to my local exchange.
What reasons could there be for being out of range? As they say you can get
it up to 6km.

Will the line go the shortest route from exchange to my house or could it
zig zag miles out of the way?

Ash

It could take a variety of routes and certainly not always the shortest.

As an example at our local Air Cadet Squadron the line leaves the building
goes via poles 300 yds down the road, then down the pole and back
underground to the BT building next door to ours!!!

Ash,

You answered your own question. You "can" get it up to 6km but some
installations fail at less than 2km due to line quality. There are
more factors than simply line length.

Fingers crossed here, as I already bought my router, in preparation for
BB next month... I'm less than a mile, and don't antipcate problems,
but you never know....

That was what I wanted to know, what are the factors? And can anything be
done about any of them?

So far I've got
1 Line quality - I don't know if anything can be done about that. I
presume the underground bit to from exchange to the green box is fixed in
length and quality.
2 The line going a long way round rather than the shortest route.

R these the only 2 possibilities?

I thought the same and ordered my splitters/modem, as I am only 1.4Km from
our enabled exchange & even though the BT Postcode checker said yes, the
attempt to place order said nay.....!?

I am about to embark on using the second (currently unused) line to the
building to see if this takes another route or, failing that, order a new
line specifically for ADSL........

So, fingers crossed for you, but do not hold breath as you may turn a bit
blue..........

I am well aware of potential problems. But I had a good deal on new a
Draytek 2600We, and if I cannot get ADSL, I should be able to shift it
on for more than I paid for it...

Did your post code checker give you a Full green/green light on 512k and
2Mb?

My line is a G G P Z accrding to the BT line status check.

hedge the bets line though.....?!

What speed do you get on a 56K modem - if its less than 28.8K due to a
bad line you are legally entitled to ask BT to improve your line
quality..

I would be interested to know what BT think your line status is.

You can get that from a program called ADSLCHECK. If you are curious
what BT think you should be capable of, give this a try.

http://www.mgillespie.plus.com/broadband/area.htm

It's halfway down the page, download it, run it, stick your phone number
in, and see what code the BT server gives you back. If you get G G for
the first 2 letters, then BT estimate is WAY off in your case, as this
indicates they think you can get 2Mb services, but in reality you are
failing at 512k. I would be interested to know what status you get from
your line.

Cheers.
