ok, i know this has prob been discussed in detail, i can't dig much up
though

basicly, why *must* you have a phone number to get adsl, the entire adsl
system is tied to phone numbers, which prob made sense at the time to
organise it, but what if i don't want to pay extra for a phone line i'm not
going to use

2 examples have come up recently

I'm trying to get someone online with adsl, he has a contract mobile, and
doesn't want to pay extra for a phone line, since it won't get used, he
doesn't have a land line at home currently (no point)

at work i managed to get adsl installed, and the simplest setup was to order
a seperate phone line, and get adsl put on it (we have isdn, small phone
exchange), this isn't the best way to do this i'm sure

also legal point of view of forceing poeple to have a phone number/line so
they can get adsl ???

or was this sorted out yonks ago ?? if so, how do go about doing it

ADSL is delivered over an *existing* phone line - that's just the way it is!

If you ask an ISP for ADSL at an address where there *isn't* a phone line,
how do you invisage that they would be able to supply it?

In order to get ADSL, you need a fixed phone line. A phone line will
automatically have a telephone number. The telephone number is used when
ordering ADSL so they can identify the line. No number, no ADSL.

I can't see what you are trying to get at in your post. If you've trying to
say "why can't I just get ADSL without a BT service" then ADSL doesn't work
like that.

Who's going to pay for the phone line, then? That doesn't come cheap.
Not to mention any relevant equipment in the exchange. Unless you don't
realise you need a pair of copper wires from the exchange, that it...

The line rental pays for...the line.
The call charges pay for...the calls.
The ADSL charge pays for...the ADSL.

You need the wire (line) so you need to pay at least two of the above
charges.

It's the only way. If a pair of wires is carrying ISDN2e, it cxan't
carry ADSL as well. The two are incompatible (at least in the UK). You
need to rent another pair of wires. I've done this too.

Unless you're going to rewrite the laws of physics, you need some copper
wires to send the ADSL down. And someone has to pay for that...and it
costs more than you might think.

well the point is without a line he wont get ADSL , As this simple rule
seems to be beyond you maybe you were not the best person for this person to
ask for help

see above answer, Maybe you need to read up on how ADSL works.

See the two above answers.

You get cable from ntl or telewest.

or wait till they release bare copper for adsl only, which has been discused
by most PTOs but none seem keen.

no, the line rental cost pays for: line rental and phone number
why couldn't i pay for the line rental and adsl then, and not pay for the
phone ?

(and don't give me: 'becuase thats how it is', some constructive answers
please?)

What is your point exactly? Why do you not want a phone number? The line is
assigned a telephone number at the exchange. Without a telephone number, how
would anyone know which pair of wires your service is on? As I've said, you
need a line in order to get and ADSL provision. You aren't paying for a
telephone number so what's your problem?

Xdsl is a service available to telephone customers much like caller display
and call waiting is. If you don't have the phone service you can't have it.
You can alternatively rent a megastream circuit instead which uses xdsl
technology but I think you will find that the telephone service dsl is a
cheaper option. If you don't like it you don't have to have it. Go with
satellite or build your own high speed digital network ;-)

You need an active telephone line which connects you to the DSLAM at
the exchange.

Lines are referred to by telephone number.

The easiest option would be to install a new line (or activate the one
you have already) and just use it for DSL.

The only problem that may arise is if you share your house with someone
and they decide to plug a phone in and start using for voice calls.

You could ask BT to only allow inbound calls (I dont know whether this
would be allowed if you have DSL on the wire, but I see no technical
reasons why not).

There has been some talk of so-called "naked DSL" services whereby you
pay for the broadband and line rental in one fee, but this has yet to
take off.

Like has already been stated, the only other options would be to have
broadband delivered by cable or wireless (dependent on their
availability in your area)

Regards, b2k4
