The mbone provided a method for multicast enabled networks (your
islands) to be joined together. That was necessary because few (none)
network routers at the time (early nineties) had native multicast
capabilities.
Nowdays, routers have multicast support built in so that, in general,
there is no need for what was the mbone.
Of course, just because multicast capability is now built into
network routers doesn't mean that all network engineers have
bothered to enable it. The trend these days seems to be to turn
off as many services as possible.
