Why is Linux changing my file perms?

Hi!

I thought I was confused and now I know for sure!

I want to set up home dirs for a number of users so that each user can
have a public_html dir and so have their own web space to FTP into,
etc.

I've set the folder perms for public_html to include Others can
Read/eXecute and I also (apparently) need to set the perm on their
home folder so that Others can eXecute. I've done this and all seems
to work fine.

However ... after some period of time, I recheck the perms on the home
dirs and the Others/eXecute has been unset so the web space cannot be
accessed ... does anyone know what's going on?

I'm using Mandrake 9.2, Apache 2.048 - I don't think anything else is
relevant but I'm pretty much a newbie with Linux.

Many thanks,
Geoff

Where have these configurations been set?

try setting them in the file '/etc/httpd/2.0/conf/httpd.conf'

Don't know Mandrake, but some distro run cron jobs
checking/changing permissions, I'd check cron.daily. However you
should set ~userid to 711, only ~userid/public_html should be
755. Thought this would be FAQ.

Good luck

Usually on the hour, msec runs. To see what is changed where
cat /usr/share/msec/perm.$SECURE_LEVEL

Brilliant! Well done! I believe you've got it!

I hadn't even heard of cron jobs until now (yes .. yes .. b****y
newbies again :-) but that would explain everything. I'll read up on
cron in the morning - Mandrake seems to have a GUI interface to allow
people like me to add a new rule to sort things out.

I agree that this should be a FA(sked)Q but I couldn't find a site
where it was a FA(answered)Q. Still ... this is a more interesting way
to learn.

I leave a msg to confirm that it's working but in the meantime ...
thanks again!

Best wishes,
Geoff

man cron
man crontab

then look in directories found with
ls -d /etc/cron.*
