Why does XP forget my WEP key?

I have XP home on this laptop, and I originally had a Netgear
wireless network card. Every time I booted it up, it would not
connect to the network until I entered the WEP key. Then everything
was fine until the next time I booted it up. It keeps forgetting the
key.

I tried replacing the card with a Dlink one, but it does the same thing.

How do I get the computer to remember the WEP key?

Sounds like you have two connection managers running. Your D-Link card
supplies a connect manager, and Windows XP has one built in. Use the D-Link
manager, disable the Windows manager. To do that, click the double-monitor
icon for wifi, click Properties, click Wireless Network, then deselect "Use
Windows to configure my wireless network settings"

By right-clicking the MY Computer line and selecting Properties/Device
Manager and configuring the card there, it should hold the configuration.
You should go to the card's website and down load the driver and install
it with the Device Manager.

Then disable the Wireless Zero Configuration service by going to Control
Panel and put it into Classic View.

Then go to Admin Tool/Services and disable WZC.

You don't need the card's utility running to show signal strength. That
can be done by going to the Local Area Network connection properties for
the card and enable Show Icon in Notification Area. It will report on the
signal strength at start-up and when the mouse arrow is on it.

HTH
