Why does SSID make a difference?

I have been trying to get a new Pocket PC to work with a Linksys BEFW11S4
v1. Whenever I enabled WEP, the Pocket PC would not connect, although with
WEP disabled it worked fine.

I had changed the default SSID to another word, but when I switched it back
to linksys, the Pocket started working with WEP enabled. What's Up? I see
no place on the Pocket PC to change the Network identifier. Could it be
that linksys was just one that had been built in?

Thanks,
Clark

You must have been connecting to different networks. When you changed the
SSID on the Pocket PC, it connected to a non-WEP network. When you switched
back to the default, you connected to a WEP-enabled network with SSID
"linksys". They could not have been the same network because one used WEP
and the other didn't.

If you want to change the SSID, change it on the router and on the Pocket
PC, and configure both with the same WEP key.

The network was the same since I was changing the settings on the router. I
see no place to set a SSID on the Pocket PC (Dell AXIM) with built in
wireless.

My laptop won't connect to the network unless I have the same SSID , so
either I am missing something on the Pocket PC (as in a place to set the
SSID) or it operates differently.

Can't help you on configuring the Pocket PC, maybe someone else can. It does
sound like you need to set the SSID on it, or at least be able to work from
a site survey list so you can choose the right network to connect to.

Well, the site survey is something I don't completely understand. It did
show the network with the correct SSID, with a lock indicating WEP and I did
set the correct Key for the Wep, but with the non-standard name it would not
connect. I am still trying to understand how to secure a network, so maybe
I was doing a better job than I thought!

The unit is only one day old ), so maybe I will figure it out. I may even
go to Dell directly to ask them, although there has been nothing I can find
in their knowledge base. And it is not covered in the owners manual.

Thanks,
Clark
