Why does my phoneline cut when on internet?

Two questions actually - my friend has just installed a new PC. When
he goes online all is fine except he loses his phone dialing tone.
Anybody ringing in will find an engaged signal. He's on broadband and
has tried changing the filter but to no avail. I live within (I
assume) the same telephone exchange area and my problem is the
opposite. The phone rings and I lose my broadband connection. Again,
all filters seem ok. Could this just be that the line is lousy or is
there some setting we both need to tweek?

What are you both connecting through? A modem or a router? Did he set both
up?
It sounds like your mate is using a modem to phone the ISP on a phone line
rather than an ADSL modem through a filter for broadband. Check any
extensions are wired up correctly and try plugging the modems and/or routers
in to the main phone socket.
If you have both checked it all I would speak to your ISP who will arrange
to do some tests with BT.
It seems odd that you both have related problems. I think it might be down
to your friend misunderstanding a few things. He will probably get a huge
bill for a using dial up rather than ADSL.

It sounds as if both could be on dial up. When I was on dial up, if Call
Waiting was on and somebody called, the call waiting signal made the dial up
connection drop and the phone immediately rang. Sounds as if that is what
is happening to the OP's line.

Thanks guys - I don't know what is happening with my mates' setup. I
know he had a weird kind of 'speeddial' box that was definitely
working on broadband before he put in a new machine. I shall have a
look tomorrow for him but I think you are right - sounds like he is on
dial up. My problem with internet dropping out when the phone rings
seems to me just a flaky line. I'm not too fussed as I shall be moving
in a months time - hopefully where there will be a better line!

Make sure that your friend does not have broadband and dialup connected to
the same machine!

Why?

I can do that with no problem, I use the dialup modem to send a FAX while
still on the broadband internet.

Because, while you have a firm grip of the situation, ie you know the
difference, the OPs friend, it sounds less likely. By removing the cable to
the original dial up modem, he can rule out that as his cause.

Sometimes you need to look a things from the perspective of users with much
less experience. It is very very common for users to have set up their
broadband incorrectly. Without an understanding of why we use filters, and
therefore unable to work back logically as to where you would put a filter
and where you wouldnt within the home, the user is restricted to the limited
information given to them by their broadband provider.
