I read a link in this NNTP forum that mention all the crossover cable
can cause damaged machines. Why? Is this a non-regulated technology by
stardars? Somebody know?

Crossover cables do not damage machines. If someone says
that they do then they are spreading myths.

Don't believe everything that you read, josepe, especially on the
Internet.

I'm not saying that it's impossible, but I've never seen any reports
of damage from crossover cables, and they've worked fine every time
that I've used them over the past several years.

There might be some network cards that don't get a reliable network
connection using a crossover cable, because the cards need the
constant link that a hub or switch provides. I haven't run into that,
either.

I don't know that they'll damage anything but I do know that some network
cards won't work with a crossover cable, they need a standard cable and a
hub, switch or router.

Show us the link and maybe we can understand. I've never seen a
crossover cable cause damage.

Where does that link say that crossover cables can damage your equipment?

What it does say is that many manufacturers will void your warranty if you
tell them you are using a crossover cable. It also states that crossover
cables do not always work and can be problematic.

I've never heard of a manufacturer caring. I've never had problems with
them, either, but I've read seemingly credible accounts of them not
working with certain cards.

Cross-over cables were designed strictly for connecting one hub to another.

Linksys has this to say about them:

http://kb.linksys.com/cgi-bin/om_isapi.dll?clientID=332615&QuestionText=crossove r&SelectName1=&advquery=%5bs%5d%5bRank%2c%2050%3a% 5bSum%3a%20crossover%5d%5bMerge%3a%20%5bThesaurus% 3a%20crossover%5d%5d%5d&infobase=linksysrev.nfo&re cord={2BC}&softpage=IKW_ENU_JDocView

"Linksys does not support networking with the use of crossover cables, as
the connection between machines has been proven to be unstable and
unreliable. Industry standards support networking with the use of an
intermediary device such as a hub or a switch. Linksys adheres to such
industry standards for networking."

There are similar statements on numerous other manufacturers web-sites. I
chose Linksys because they seem to be the most popular in the consumer
market.

That's still a long way from saying they damage equipment or void
warranties.
