Why can't I update a networking driver?

This may be a dumb question, but in an effort to fix a problem with my
Linksys WPC11 wireless networking card I have been trying, without success,
to update the installed driver. The problem is, no matter what I do, when I
get done the device manager properties for the device continue to show the
old driver, coming from somewhere inside the vast empire of Windows software
on my PC, not the location where I think the stuff should come from.

I think I've done this successfully before but I just can't seem to get it
to work now. Here's what I've been doing:

Went to the LInksys.com support site download page and downloaded the latest
"driver", which seems to be an archive with a lot of stuff in it.

Gone to the device manager and told it to "Update Driver", installing from a
specific location and browsing to the directory of the stuff I just
downloaded. This goes through and tells me it worked, then wants to reboot,
but after reboot it's the same old driver.

Thinking maybe I needed to run the setup program in the directory of stuff
it downloaded I tried that, which complained that I already had the stuff
installed, so I uninstalled all of this stuff, then ran the install
program -- same result -- old driver.

I'm not sure what a driver looks like to be sure what Linksys provided
actually contains a driver. Is there some other trick to this?

I can't seem to get it to work under XP either, but with a different
failure -- Under XP it keeps telling me I already have a better driver (Not
if you believe versions and dates, the one on the machine is over 2 years
old!)
