Recently I bought myself a personalised domain name (£1.99/year>why the hell
not Anyway, the hosting co I registered with have mail forwarding for
free, other services cost extra BUT (and its a big but this if I want to
send email from my own domain, I would have to use their dialup number (at
local rates but so what!?) so that my mail could originate from
(E-Mail Removed) - Who's got a decent hosting package (or free smtp/pop3
access?) I'm going to (probably) go with Bulldog as my ISP and they do have
a package but it never hurt me to shop around before so here I am, what does
the ng think/know?

Why not set a MX record using zoneedit or something and run your own
mail server?

You can always 'spoof' your reply address to make it appear to come from
your domain.

Unless I have misunderstood something...

You can simply use your ISP's smtp server to send e-mail (in Bulldog's case:
smtp.bulldogdsl.com) and set your "from" address in your email client to
(E-Mail Removed) etc.. - this will display our email address as coming from
your domain to people you email.

As a sidenote, if you do order ADSL with Bulldog would you mind quoting my
referral code while ordering?

Its bdol 87431 - you can just quote it when ordering online or by telephone.

I'd be grateful if you let me know as well (just send me an email!)

Regards
Sunil

Thanks for the help Sunil, I ordered the 512k service already yesterday but
I rang up today to "check the progress" and to give them your bdol nr as the
refferer but there is no reward scheme for reffering a 512k customer, only

http://www.cheapdomainnames.net/

It was the *.co.uk domain and there is a min of 2 years, cost me about £6.50
with VAT and everything, still cheap though and my email addy is going to be
definitely worth the extra money spent on it. I've got it to say:

(E-Mail Removed)

Cool eh?

Would like to run my own smtp server, not done before though but good
project. If my server was offline for a period during the day, will the mail
packets be queued up or will they expire/bounce back if the server is not
operational (say I want to re-boot or worse: get some sleep

Tried to do that in Outlook and tiscali email, it wouldn't log onto the mail
server if my From wasn't setup properly, the Reply field didn't affect the
logging on. But, if I setup a 2nd copy of the account, the 1st being
correct, and the 2nd being From (E-Mail Removed) Reply same, it would send
the mail if the server accepted the initial acct login.

I want to be able to use my domain for other family members too though and
although I can handle "puzzles" such as above in "real-time" the rest of the
family wouldn't. I'm just going to read through the Zoneedit FAQ after I
write this email, thnx for that idea btw.

You understood rightly Sunil, however I've ordered the "no-frills" package
as of now, no pop3 mailboxes, nothing apart from adsl access, and I was
trying to work out a free way round the mailing problem, there is no free
services like that I can find though, so the next step would be to order
some sort of pop3 acct package, is my best bet to go through Bulldog then do
you think? Or can I get a better value/service elsewhere?

See other reply elsewhere Sunil, did try for you.

When ntl: went through their second run of dropping emails I looked into
hosting packages. My requirements were SMTP, POP and IMAP. I ended up
going for o2hoster who promptly went bust when they were sued by O2, and
then moved to mark1hosting.com. Service is reasonably reliable and not too
expensive. They have email-only hosting packages, see
http://www.mark1hosting.com/services/email.htm, £1.49 or £2.49 per month.
Personally I went for their £30/year with web hosting as the extra £10 or
so seemed worth it as I want to serve stuff later (a bit behind schedule
at the moment though!) Nice thing is that you have 100 or 200 accounts, so
you can set up family members with (E-Mail Removed) and either
let them collect from mark1's hosts or forward directly to their existing
email addresses.

Zane.

Two "budget" ways to do this:

1. Use a free POP3 service like http://www.hotpop.com/ or
http://www.gmx.net/ (if you can navigate the German sign up pages!) for POP3
access in conjunction with your ISP's SMTP server.

or

2. Sign up for a free ISP account (BTO, Freeserve etc) and dial in once
every couple of months to keep the account active - using that ISP as a
place to collect your POP3 email from and you "actual" ISP for SMTP again.
