Which wireless router / ADSL Modem works?

Hi,

I've had enough of dialup so I'm going to go for ADSL. I need a
wireless router / modem to share internet access for a couple of PCs
and ideally a printer. Even more ideally a firewall too. My main
criteria is that the thing works and doesn't need to be rebooted or
reconfigured every week. The only box I can find that hasn't got bad
press for poor reliability is the Draytek Vigor 2600, which is
generally twice the price of anything else. I'm happy to pay for
reliability if I have to - is there anything else worth considering?

Both my Zyxels have been very reliable and stable.

We sell the Safecom SWAMRU-54108 which has 4 ethernet ports, 54Mb wireless
(802.11g) and includes a print server (USB port), firewall, etc as you
would expect.

Our customers seem to be happy with these routers - we've never had one
returned.

See http://www.linuxadsl.co.uk/ for more details.

The price is Â46.99 + VAT

I, my sister and brother, (separate houses) all run BT 2100, 2000 and
2110 units, with BT branded PCI, USB and PCMCIA cards for wireless as
well as wired networking. None of us has ever had a problem with them
that wasn't our own fault really.

And they are currently dead cheap.

I use a Netgear DG834GT.
Had it for about 2 months now absolutely rock solid, never had to reboot it.
Also dead easy to set up.

You won't find many with a printer port.
Draytek is the best, this side of Cisco and you can find them on eBay at
half price.
They are dead reliable you need not worry about buying a second hand one,
that's how I bought mine.

Martin

Draytek take about 10 mins to setup then a light dust every 6 months is all
that is required. I have a 2600vg which has everthing you asked for and
more.

The good thing about draytek 2600vg is there feature set ,I doubt the
average home user would ever need 75% of it's features . You spend a bit
more once then thats it.

The only thing that they don't do is adsl 2 as far as I am aware ,no doubt
the newer ones will do soon though.

I had a Vigor 2600 until is was killed by a lightning strike (which did at
least mean that the computer was unscathed). I replaced it with a DG834GT.
On balance, I prefer the 2600. The 834GT reports a data rate of 108Mbit as
advertised, until I try sending significant quantities of data, when it
drops to 54Mbit, making its extra cost less worthwhile. The DG834GT also
has some bugs (don't set the disconnect on idle timeout to timeout, as the
router, or mine at least does not reconnect properly afterwards).

I find that every month or so the 834GT starts to run slow and has to be
rebooted, but I have also seen this happen with a couple of other router
types.
