hi,
i have 20 computers on the network and i need a server to share s folder for
all of them, but in windows xp there is a limit for 10 connections, some one
told me that in windows server2003std there is a limit for 15 connections,
and i don`t need only file share.
how do you think, which windows is for me?

"windows server2003std there is a limit for 15 connections" that is false.
since you have only 20 users, you may think about sbs 2003.

I would say Microsoft Windows 2003 Standard Server or the Small Business
edition.

As others have already mentioned, it seems you misunderstand what the limits
are. There are inbound connection limits with workstation OSes...not so with
server ones. However, for a server, you must buy a CAL (client access
license) for each user or device who will access the server. This is not
based onsimultaneous usage. I usually go with "per device" - so, 20 CALs.

You should definitely implement a domain model - a 20-computer workgroup is
simply not manageable. You can't possibly be backing up all your data - and
certainly not centrally. Plus, you can't really secure anything.

I agree with the other person who mentioned SBS - it would very likely be a
good, and affordable, fit for you (and it includes more goodies, such as
Exchange server). A domain model is infinitely preferable from an admin and
security standpoint - users have a single domain account which controls
their access, and you can control that all from the server, and back
everything up from the server. The server should store *all* your users'
data, and your workstations should be configured so that users log into the
domain and not the workstation.

Try posting in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs for more info and help if
you choose to investigate that.

And I truly hope you won't take this the wrong way, but based on your
question, I'm assuming you haven't supported domain environments
before....hence your company should consider employing the services of a
good, experienced (in SBS) consultant in to set it up for you. A
poorly-installed server is worse than none at all. :-)
