Which type/how many CALs do I need?

We have been running Netware 5.1 servers exclusively and have plans to
migrate to Windows 2003 during the summer. I have ordered a couple of books
on Windows 2003 server to bone up on before the migration, but need info
right away on the type and number of CALs we may need.

We have about 110 workstations and about 550 students/staff that access 3
Netware servers with them at different times. Our plan is to buy two
Windows 2003 servers migrate all data to them and then probably retire the
Netware servers. From my perusal of the MS site, it is my understanding
that the "Per Device or Per User" CAL enables devices/users up to the number
of CALs purchased to access any or all servers simultaneously. If I
understand correctly, we would NOT want the new "User-based" CALs because it
appears we would have to purchase CALs for every user object (about 550 in
our case) even though we would have only a maximum of 110 concurrent
connections (the number of workstations on the network).

Do individual workstations sometimes take more than one connection license
to the server software, depending on the services it is accessing. I have
noticed on Netware servers that workstations sometimes use multiple
connection licenses for some reason. If a workstation takes only needs only
one CAL during a session (even if it is accessing both servers), we can get
by with 110 of these CALs, am I correct?

Hi
I would bet you will get a better response from the Active_Directory
news group. They deal with Licensing alot more than the networking folks.

Thank you,
