My modem is plugged into a phone line extension which is plugged into a
socket that has been run from the master socket for my house. Will this
setup suffer from any problems(signal degradation/loss of speed) apposed to
plugging the modem directly into the master socket.

Think about it - the line has already run several kilometres from your
local exchange, an extra twenty metres or so isn't going to make any
difference (obviously if you have a poor quality extension cable then
you might have issues).

The line running from the exchange will be high quality industrial gear
designed for long runs right? But when it gets to home wiring its a whole
different matter even if high quality cable is used the longer the run the
more loss you will get. that's my understanding anyway. Whether or not the
loss will be enough to worry about I don't know that's why I was asking.

As he said, unless you use extremely low quality cables and slack
connectors themn you won't have a problem.

I didn't say that, it does it's job reasonably well considering. I was
just trying to point out that it isn't much different in quality to a
reasonable extension cable.
And don't top post.

Posting at the top. That is the opposite of the way of what I, (and
most of the UK usenet), do it. It makes the thread harder to follow,
and I, probably like others, automatically look to the bottom of a
reply to see the new text.

Is it true that BT still maintain some cable with thin aluminium conductors?
Don't suppose you can you reach 6KM with ADSL on those.
