Apologies if this has been asked before (I'm sure it has) but I have
just ordered ntl 150k capped broadband service to replace ntl dial-up.

My current set-up is a Win98SE and a WinXPHome set up for networking
and ICS using the XP ICS wizard on both machines.

Host machine is XP. Norton Internet Security also installed.

If I wished to use a router which should I buy and how easy is it to
set up.

How easy is it to cancel ntl dialup (the £10 a month service) and
replace it with ntl 1p per minute service - to use as a backup.

Will I be able to retain existing mail and newservers, and hence keep
the same email addresses.

TIA

When I used ntl, I used a Linksys BEFSR81 router which apart from the
odd lockup (3 times in 18 months I think) worked really well.

Setting up the router is easy, plug a network cable between the ethernet
port on the modem and the WAN port on the router, then plug a cable from
the switch ports on the back of the router to each PC.

Changing your dialup to pay as you use is easy enough, just call ntl.
Don't ask for it to be cancelled or your current email address will be
killed off. Just ask them to change it to the pay as you use it option
then when your cable modem is active carry on using the same email address.

When you go through the registration process with the cable modem you'll
be asked to setup another email address, but just because you have it,
doesn't mean you have to use it.

You only get 128k upload though, which if you use P2P apps such as Bit
Torrent or like to run an FTP from time to time severely limits your
download speed as ACK packets clash a lot on NTL cable ime!

Basically, you start uploading to someone at 15k/sec, then your download
speed drops to that as well! This has not happened to me as of yet on
ADSL.
