I have a small home network with three Win98se systems. I connect to the
internet through a router which can use either a dial-up connection or a
cable modem. The router can be configured to use which ever method I
choose. I used the dial-up connection at first and then upgraded to
cable. Everything worked just fine with the original dial-up and then
later with the cable.
Then, today the cable went down and I decided to use the dial-up until
the cable came back on. But, even though the dial-up connection worked
OK and connected to my ISP, my Mozilla 1.4 browser couldn't connect to
any web site. It just timed out. I fiddled with some of the settings in
Control Panel > Network and got things to work again. But while I was
"fiddling" some questions came up.
First, what should I use as Primary Network logon? Choices are, Client
for Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Logon or Windows Logon.
Second, what protocols should I have installed and associated with my
network card? I have three currently installed and associated. IPX/SPX,
NetBEUI and TCP/IP.
Third, under Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN
Settings there is a check box titled "Automatically detect settings". It
appears that this box must be unchecked for the dial-up option to work.
Any comments about this?
Thanks and regards, hawk
