which is the preferred adapter?

in a multi-homed server, which is the "preferred adapter" that's spoken of
in DNS and netbios documentation. I can't find this defined anywhere. thanks
for the help,

Properties of Network Places, then "Advanced" from the top menu, then
"Advanced Settings.." from the dropdown menu. You will see a Priority list,
the adapter at the top is the "Prefered Adapter".
