It is my understanding that the OP is looking for software to monitor
actual activity, not statistics. As in, is my kid looking at the BBC
Website or Nymphette Cheerleaders Dot Com.
There are a bunch of commercial solutions, but here's two freebies I'd
recommend (and have used to great effect m'self):
1: Ethereal
Install it on a PC downstream from the systems you wish to monitor and
you can view the datastream in real-time. This, however, might be a bit
low-level (not to mention technical) for the OP, which leads me on to
2: RealVNC (or TightVNC)
A simple little program which sits in the system tray (although it *can*
be hidden) and waits for you to connect to it using the client
application; once you do, you get a copy of whatever the system is
looking at up on your screen. It can be used to either monitor in
real-time or take control of the 'server' system to shutdown
applications they shouldn't be running. It's easy to install and use,
and pretty good at what it does.
As for creating logfiles for viewing in non-realtime, I'd recommend a
proxy application for the main PC: all other PCs would connect via the
master PC, which would then record a log of URLs visited. Some
firewalls (including the excellent open-source SmoothWall) can do this,
but I'm sure there's an application for Windows somewhere to do the
same. Having not tried this m'self, I'll refrain from recommending
anything here.
Hope this information is of use.
