Which laptop card

I need to get a wireless laptop card but am a little confused by PCMCIA
cards and Cardbus cards - whats the difference?

I have a Toshiba Portege 7140 and I have two slots free - I think they are
PCMCIA ones. I'm after a Netgear card, to go with the Netgear DG834G router
but somewhat confused between the three cards available at Ebuyer (quickfind
codes 45112, 56198, 52451). Which one do I need for a 802.11g network?

Thanks

None - as far as I know!

*NOT* 45112 = it's 801.11a (this is at 5GHz)

Either of the other 2. They can run at double-speed (108Mbs) with particular
named Netgear routers - but both say that they will operate will all 802.11g
(54Mbs) or 801.11b (11Mbs) networks.

Not strictly true: the Cardbus and PCMCIA systems are slightly
different; older laptops have the latter, and you may find that
Cardbus cards may not work in them. For example, I have a couple of
elderly (5+ years old) Dells that work w/ PCMCIA NICs but not with
similar Cardbus cards.

If the OP's machine is relatively recent, then the PCMCIA/Cardbus
issue is, indeed, irrelevant.

Two typos! Both the above network names are 802.<whatever>

My machine is about 3/4 years old now so not sure which of the two cards I'd
need. Its a P3-500 so its not that old (I think). I'll try and dig out the
manual or give Toshiba a call, unless anyone knows which one I need?

Thanks again

I recently put a Cardbus wireless card in a really old laptop (P166),
it worked without a hitch.

Anything over a P233 or so pretty much is going to have cardbus.
Some machines under that speed may not support Cardbus cards.
Anything under a P150 or so will almost certainly not.

Ok, maybe P120 then.

The one machine I have that I know for sure doesn't work w/ Cardbus is
(gulp!) a 1995 vintage 486. So maybe the advice should be "unless
your laptop belongs in a museum, Cardbus and PCMCIA cards will work
equally well" :-)
